til that cocaine is a stimulant

for some reason i had always thought it was in the opioid-narcotic class

but now that i think about it, that would make no sense

it used to be added to beverages precisely for its stimulating properties, and after it was outlawed it was replaced by a much milder stimulant in the form of caffeine

i knew that

so why in god's name did i ever think it was a narcotic

I looked this up and the two sources I looked at said kitty-corner is an 18th century bastardization of catty-corner which is a 16th century bastardization of cater-corner, meaning the diagonal corner (cater derived from French quatre for 4)

Catawampus seems to have derived separately first appearing in the 18th century and first meant "fierce or destructive" but 30 years later in 1864 it also came to mean askew, crooked or out of alignment. The first recorded use for it as diagonal came in 1873.

In a US dialect poll concerning these words 50% of Americans said kitty-corner  (mostly in the north/midwest), 30% said catty-corner  (mostly in the south), and the remainder said cater-corner (the original), diagonal, catawampus, or something else.

So if anything I'd say catawampus is the bastardized form of kitty/catty-corner and used its similar cat based prefix to morph its meaning of askew or crooked into also including diagonal. Cattywampus is definitely a bastardization of catawampus any way you slice it though
