Samus Aran

also once a cop stopped me for "speeding" when i was going 2 over the speed limit. he probably had some other reason to stop me or something idk

squirrelfriend

It's purely white privilege to complain about being pulled over for a mere speeding ticket
Unless you're one of those poor people who can't afford the ticket and then get charged more money because you can't pay and then get your license revoked because you can't pay and then you still owe money because losing your license makes it even harder to get to work to make money to pay your ticket and if you do decide to drive anyway you risk ending up in jail lol
a speed ticket is based on objective criteria like well speed
it's their fault and they should be carpooling or taking the bus anyhow
because everyone lives somewhere with a reliable bus system or knows a "privileged" friend willing to drive them

squirrelfriend

also good sir ypr, there are many rural localities that have bus services here
you just have to walk a bit
they can take you to where you can get to the greyhound or amtrak station

squirrelfriend

maybe city planners should think of that when you have populations that can't drive for whatever reason

squirrelfriend

Last I heard in civics class, driving is a PRIVILEGE not a right

yeah not everywhere has an amtrak or a bus station anywhere near their residence or place of employment. The rural localities in norva are much different than those throughout the country since so much is connected

well thats why I'm in planning. But so much has been developed without those considerations and things that have already been developed tend to be shelved until the more wealthy want to update them. Unfortunately many towns and cities have very limited budgets and to them expanding public transit doesn't seem like a great idea because it's not very profitable and often needs to be subsidized if it won't be used as much by the middle or upper classes. So in the end the less fortunate get fucked

that's a convenient way to dismiss scores of people who need to drive to make it to their 2nd or 3rd job and they're just scraping by hoping their jalopy doesn't decide to die today when they can't afford any repairs for the next half year

Civics classes are bullshit clearly

squirrelfriend

oh i don't live near dc
lol are you kidding
how is that walmart they hope to attract going to get a labor pool without affordable transport or even customers
the trouble is shortsighted thinking and the bean counters don't realize the benefits do not exactly hit their balance sheets as a dedicated line item

sounds like we need better communities (and planners)

Yeah that is the trouble and because of that the US has relatively terrible public transit depending on what part of the country you live in. Having a car is a necessity for many if they want to be able to work
