Hiro

I'm considering maybe building a PC in the Fall, here's what I came up with:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/LKxP29

The first one I did was like $600 more expensive, mostly because I had a different graphics card and a different case.
Dunno if I should get a better monitor or just deal with the one I have currently since it's not super horrible.

Opinions? Too much? anything else I need to consider?

A couple notes:
  • Unless you plan on streaming/doing 3d modeling/lots of video rendering, a 3900X is probably extremely overkill. Don't get more than a 3700X. Hell, a 2700X will almost certainly do you fine too, and that's half the price. with the cooler you went with you wont be able to get the max benefit of a 3900X anyway.
  • 32 GB of ram is probably also overkill, tho a more acceptable level of overkill. 16gb of 3200 ddr4 will probably do you just peachy tbh.
  • just to note, you can cop a 1 TB ssd for about $100 these days if you keep your eyes peeled for basic deals. jsut noting cuz pcpartpiker has it listed as over $200; don't pay that much.

Hiro

as far as the ssd yeah I figured
what exactly makes the 3900X not worth the money though? If it's super great and all, it should last me longer, right?
I didn't really know what I was looking for in regards to a processor cooler so if there's a better one that's decent priced lemme know

AAAAAAAA

kind of, but not really? like the issue is it's too good. unless you're doing specific cpu-demanding stuff on your rig you're never going to utilize it's full potential. the extra potential isn't really going to expand it's utility years from now in any meaningful way; you'll be looking at an upgrade around the same time whether you go 3700x or the 3900x really. most games are far more GPU dependent these days anyway.
also without a high-end cooling solution too, you're decreasing your ability to ever hit that max potential anyway. i think for a decently high end gaming focused rig though, the cooling you've got is probably fine.

C.Mongler

yea the 3700x is totally fine, if not even light overkill in itself lol. ive been there, i almost got an i9 a few months ago but then i was like am i really going to use this thing like that

and the answer is hell naw lol

guys, if i have a budget of $150, what should i even get to replace my gtx 760?
then i should prob replace my i3 8100, but ehh i gotta be saving tbh

Technology and globalism go hand and hand. If you want to be on the forefront of technology then you gotta be global

the 8300 is FAR less a limitation for you than the 760 is lol

Are you open to buying used? befuddlement

the 570 would be a big upgrade and the 580 a huge one, and then the 590 would be more than 2x the performance of your current card hocuspocus;

id be down for used
i remember seeing some listings having rx570s and 80s used but they overclocked them while cryptomining- no returns allowed too- is that shady to you enough to not get it lol?

literally anything else? lol
$150 is pretty tight for a new GPU though. you're gonna have to wait for a nice lil sale or buy used at that budget
the RX 580 is probably your best bet if that's your budget for max gains compared to a 760. there's been sales that have been putting it around $150 new; i'd keep a look out for one
if you can save more dosh, the rtx 2060 keeps dipping below $300 and would be a much heftier upgrade.

HURRY GET THIS WHILE YOU CAN

https://www.newegg.com/sapphire-radeon-r9-fury-100379ntoc-sr/p/N82E16814202340

that's the absolute most power you can get for $125 by far lol

and the 90 day warranty is better than the 0 day warranty you'd get out of a used card

otherwise these ($190) are equally as powerful but have 2x the vram

https://www.newegg.com/sapphire-radeon-rx-590-100415p8gl/p/N82E16814202333

https://www.newegg.com/xfx-radeon-rx-590-rx-590p8dfd6/p/N82E16814150817

on the nvidia side the closest equivalent is the 1660 which is ~$220

but if you genuinely can't afford to spend more than $150 and don't want that furry then a used 580 is easily your best bet, it's only ~10% less powerful than the fury but also has 2x the vram

Kalahari Inkantation

and here's a brand new 8gb 570 for $150 after rebate

https://www.newegg.com/msi-radeon-rx-570-rx-570-armor-mk2-8g-oc/p/N82E16814137291

but the difference in power between the 570 and the 590/fury is like 30%

Hiro

Quote from: Snowy on July 29, 2019, 03:35:15 PMI had told Hiro on discord to move down to the 3700X, hell even the 3600 is amazing and invest in a 240mm AIO water cooler. Never been happier with any cooling solution than a water cooler. The 3900X is really cool, but unless you're streaming on twitch daily, encoding/rendering video, more workbench loads instead of gaming, the 3900X is wasted money tbh.
I mean I am partly thinking about building this for work purposes, like rendering video. Gaming too yeah but not entirely for that.

C.Mongler

Also are you rendering 4k content or 1080p stuff? If you're not working in 4k, probs fine with a 3700x tbh
