Dear Diary,

Horses are hitched to the wagon and everything seems to be loaded. Mother insists on an extra set of wool underwear and   fur jacket, but it seems unnecessary in the summer sun.

We embark for Bemidji, the only city in Minnesota. Bemidji,  where winter stays resident for nine out of the twelve months.
Why do we willingly travel to that place? Why do we risk our fingers and toes to the elements? Why do we risk starvation during the cruelest months, where food is scarce and the wagons cannot travel more than a wheel in any direction?

Why?

Because, I am searching for a man.

A man who can give me purpose and teach me the ways of the tundra and the frozen lakes and the timber. A man who can mimic a midnight loon on a summer's eve in the warm months, where the temperature touches forty Fahrenheit. A man who can find wildberries in ten foot snow, who can down a one hundred foot white spruce with a casual swing of his axe, who can face the wild winter gales head on and laugh...

His name draws whispers in taverns and shudders from housewives home at twilight, looking through foggy windows at the deep woods beyond, waiting for their husbands to return.

I seek this man and I will stop at nothing to meet him, to become his apprentice.

I seek Paul Bunyan.

yeah

i have a plane ticket to fly down on the 11th of september (yes i'm flying on 9/11 i know). then we will hopefully leave california on the 13th?? drive should only take three and a half days and that's when taking it pretty easy and only driving for like 9 hours a day at the most
