true, though i'd sure hope ukraine is realistic enough to understand that whether or not the """west""" """recognizes""" a foreign claim is utterly meaningless in practical terms, especially in this case

the most pragmatic approach for ukraine at this point is to hopefully beat back russia's irregular forces in donbas, relinquish crimea in the aftermath as a bargaining chip to alleviate tensions and get russia to off, and move on

the sooner they acknowledge that they're never getting it back, the sooner we can put this all behind us

and the sooner they can join us in nato because territorial integrity is a fundamental prerequisite[/spoiler]

the day russia agrees to " off" from one of her slav sisters, is the day hell truly freezes over.  it's almost ingrained into the russian raison d'être to protect all slavs from perceived threats, which nato def. is to them.

the irony is that russia's sanctions will hurt more than the ones the west is trying to impose on it

but greece was at least (assumed to be) economically sound when it gained entry into the eu/eurozone, and ukraine's economy too will need to stabilize before anyone even considers sending them a formal invite
