Why play video games? Why read books? Entertainment doesn't have to make you a better person

I only watch tv for sports and game of thrones though. I actually hate how much I have to watchtv wwith my girlfriend. Just boring
i think notsid summed up why tv is worse than anything else

the other night i sat down with a group of friends and watched a ufc match on pay per view. Before that were preliminaries, aired on the regular sports channel. Its kind of amazing how similar sports stations and cable news are in their layout, tickers at the bottom, abrupt commercial interruptions, yelling out whats happening or what you think is happening. Totally sensory overload. It's crazy to me that I used to spend hours on hours in front of a tv watching cartoons and later trash tv. How can one grow with all these things being thrown at you left and right? 8 minutes of television programming and then a 4 minute window of glass cleaner adverts.

I was on wikipedia last night and the ending of breaking bad had a 75 minute runtime, including commercials. the final episode itself had a runtime of 55 minutes. 20 minutes of your time eaten up by advertising. Kind of ridiculous.

it's too goddamn much for me to handle. everything's jumping around and going crazy and it's impossible to sit down and actually enjoy anything. i can't become immersed in a good tv show knowing it could be cut abruptly at any second by some wailing kid and supermom trying to sell me spill-proof diapers.

another issue is that most tv shows today are reality shows about nothing. like really who wants to watch a show about rednecks making duck whistles

it's the most ridiculous thing ever but apparently they sold 400 million in merchandise

most "fans" of that show probably never went out of their way to watch it the first time. they were probably too lazy to change the channel and too lazy to get up and passively watched it, then they started to "enjoy" it because the commercials in between told them it's cool
