from the time you're born until your last year of high school, all the adults around you are either trying to help you plan your path to some college or cramming the idea that college is the most important part of your life down your throat.

you see kids studying from 5000 page SAT prep books that really do jack shit; you see kids playing sports or joining some other extracurricular (this word has been unused in my life these past 5 years) group just to "look good" for colleges; you see kids killing themselves to be perfect on every worthless homework assignment which, in all honestly, means nothing the week after you turn it in; and you see kids kissing ass everywhere to get recommendation letters to some shitty school

and then once you get to college you have sex (unless you're a boyager) and drop out

and with all this emphasis on "how hard" it is to get to college, nobody ever talks about how the fuck you pay for it

does anybody remember those flashing shoes. those were fucking stupid and i wanted to kick the ass of every kid who owned

my memories have a third-person perspective
even from early youth
most of my memories in my early youth are incredibly bizarre
slushed, abstract disengaged colors of blue and white splotched against winter tundra and remembering objects without their assimilated meaning embedded in them, causing them to be floating entities in space

also i remember spending my time on my parents' drive thru. It was muddy, clod with wet dust. Puddles were brown and solid in color. I played with black plant containers, the flimsy sort that splinters with moderate pressure. It'd serve for a ship for Young Clucky. I imagined an European colony on that ship, with African slaves. I imagined poetic justice, and spent about an hour carefully cracking the ship and watch the mud slowly suck everyone down under, their passions and their lives forever silenced.
