On the topic of the whole San Fran/San Francisco thing, people in NYC rarely call the city "Big Apple". If you say Big Apple in NYC, you might as well write "I'm a tourist" on your forehead

Also when we say "the city" we almost always mean Downtown/Midtown Manhattan
