but on the other hand i think it's easy to rationalize their decision

between the wii u's complete failure to thrive and the total absence of the xbox one, the ps4 is really not going to have any competition whatsoever in japan, so a slight delay probably isn't going to hurt them much, especially if it means they can pour more resources into trying to secure north america lol

Do South-East Asia regions have a fairly large Christmas shopping season comparable to US's? If so, that would explain wanting to launch there before Christmas.

Sony probably believes that, without much Christmas shopping, the PS4 be a bigger hit at launch in Japan if they wait until there's a slightly better game selection. Or maybe it's just that all the regions with significant Christmas shopping are a higher priority for manufacturing enough systems.
