Mewtwo confirmed as playable

...but not until Spring 2015 and not unless you own both versions of the game.

Some of the other stuff announced in the Nintendo Direct just now include 8-player battles and a new stage builder in which you use the touchscreen to draw platforms and walls

nitnendo's jumped on the shitty dlc bandwagon head first it seems

Samus Aran

this is more offensive than typical dlc though because if you just want mewtwo in your wii u you have to spend a whole extra $40 for the 3ds version lol

john happens to have it though so we'll be able to use him in our wii u versions...assuming there isn't some weird account-based lock on linking the two games so only he'd be able to

Samus Aran

also holy shit there's way more stuff in the wii u version lmao the 3ds version is a $40 demo

Classic

Wii U version will be the best.

Good job Nintendo, for getting me interested in a series I never really cared about.  :(

Nyerp

looks like im only getting the wii u version

also who gives a fuck about mewtwo

i certainly don't but i object to this out of principle

nintendo can rot

YPrrrr

Whaaaaat the console version will be better than the portable? No way

From what I'm seeing mewtwo will be free if you have both versions but likely available for purchase if you don't

A summary of some of the other announcements:
The game runs in full HD 1080p
There's quite a focus on bigger stages for 8P. I like a lot of these new stages.
Palutena's Guidance is like a replacement for Snake's codec and has KI:U-like conversations with Pit
Ridley joins the battle... as a mix between stage boss (like Yellow Devil) and AI partner (like Flying Men)
Returning features from Brawl that were missing from 3DS: item frequency, coin battle, stamina battle, special smash, My Music, CDs, event mode, masterpieces, trailer videos, stage builder, tournament
Basically all of the solo content can now be played with two local players: classic, all-star, stadium, trophy rush, etc.
The main new game mode is a board game called Smash Tour
Wii U version includes almost all of the music from the 3DS version
You can play with a friend against strangers online
There's voice chat online, but it's disabled during the actual matches supposedly to prevent network lag in gameplay.
There are several features which will not be available at launch and instead are future updates.
With 8-player matches, there's a technical limitation in that you can't use more than 7 Wii Remotes or more than 7 Wii U Pro Controllers. This isn't Nintendo's fault, that's a limitation to the Bluetooth standard itself. Other than that (and of course the 1 GamePad limit), you can play with any combination of controllers - even with 8 gamecube controllers if you use two adapters.

Some things that were not announced include:
Any Wii U exclusive fighters
Break the Targets
"Tower of Smash" or whatever else some popular leaks claimed would exist

Fun fact: if you don't own any other Nintendo hardware, the minimum price at MSRP to play 8-player Smash is $600. $300 for a Wii U, $100 for Smash game+controller bundle, $20 for another gamecube adapter, and $180 ($30 x 6) for Gamecube controllers. I've personally given Nintendo so much money for accessories over the years that I own more than enough controllers to support 8 players.

I imagine there's a good chance of Mewtwo being available also as a separate paid DLC
