Next Tuesday, April 8, at 6pm EDT, there will be a Smash Bros-only Nintendo Direct

This will be only the second Nintendo Direct of 2014. The last one was two months ago, Feb 13, even though before 2014 they were having presentations every month.

Considering they've done new character reveals in previous regular Nintendo Direct presentations, I'm guessing we can expect that and much more in a Direct focused entirely on Smash Bros.

Examples of stuff we don't know about and which I feel like we might see include:
release window, hopefully as specific as a month
final titles
more WiiU/3DS differences
game modes, like maybe single player stuff, stage builder, or online
real gameplay clips

Probably for an arcade version. Namco makes Mario Kart arcade games for Japan, so now that they're developing Smash that seems likely.

Summary of this Nintendo Direct:
Newcomer: Greninja
Returning characters: Yoshi, Sheik, Zero Suit Samus, Charizard
Ridley confirmed as just a boss, not a fighter.
Mid-battle form changes do not exist anymore. The characters that used to transform have a new special move instead. Samus in particular simply doesn't lose her armor during Final Smash anymore.
3DS version releases this summer
Wii U version releases half a year later, in Winter 2014
Music: 3DS version has 2 songs per stage like Melee, Wii U version has the same My Music system as Brawl
Every stage now has a Final Destination mode, in which design features like the background and textures stay the same but the shape of the stage becomes a boring flat platform. Sakurai says he offers this because he realizes how much competitive players love Final Destination and he wants them to have some variety.
Online play confirmed for both games. The online matchmaking menu has "for fun" and "for glory" options to separate casual fun from competition. It now seems to try to match people up by skill level.
Sakurai suggests that we should buy Wii ethernet adapters to reduce lag. I don't know what to take of this.
Rare legendary Pokemon now appear in Masterballs instead of normal-looking pokeballs
There are some alt costumes: Wii Fit Trainers has both female and male variants, Little Mac has a Wireframe costume.
Moveset customization exists, but it's not available when playing with strangers online.
3DS version has a "Smash Run" mode that's like a weird mash-up of City Trial from Air Ride, Adventure Mode from Melee, and SSE from Brawl.

I'm guessing that the Wii U version will have another new mode that's different from Smash Run.

Maybe one reason 3DS has an exclusive mode is that the way it's designed makes more sense for everybody to have their own screen, while so far Smash Bros on consoles have stuck to making everything visible on one unsplit screen

If I were to guess about upcoming announcements, I'd say Wario's reveal might coincide with Mario Kart 8 and Meta Knight's might come with the US release of Triple Deluxe.
