Yeah, they don't punish you, aside from whatever participation/attendance grade the professor chooses to have.

Why do I think this or why is it so

Of the people I know who try going back to school after taking a break I think maybe <10% were successful. Why is it so hard? I don't know personally but I would hypothesize that it is because you forget much of what you already knew and you lose your study habits. It would probably be difficult to adjust to homework again for someone who has just been working and is used to home being all relaxation.
