People "don't know" that LBJ was the first black president because Clinton was proclaimed to be the first black president. I expect that Newsweek followed that same line of reasoning to declare Obama the first gay president.  There's precedent for this.

This is what I hate about Boyah. Christfuck, what news source do YOU want? Half the time I research a topic, I check multiple news sites. Just fucking google it if you don't trust the source.
