Bought a big iced tea and had the university building within appreciable distance. I’m not saying I was excited about getting there, but those expensive lawns are groomed for lazing on and I had some serious procrastinating to do.

Sometimes you feel like someone rammed a spigot into the back of your head and turned the valve just a little, just enough to let a drip out every now and then. Like everything’s not really there, you know?

None of that mattered because it was kind of sunny and kind of warm and a lot of people were in decent moods and then the old guy on the bike gets hit by a car.

I see my life as a series of vignettes and when I look back on them, I like to add music to them, some sepia tones, blurs around the edges and maybe some jungle sound effects.

So, the moment I look over, let’s just say this starts playing.

Music, check.

Red car careens around corner and clips old guy’s front tire. Old guy proceeds to fly over handlebars, helmet jostled with the strap already a little too high, gloved right hand touches hood of car before shoulder does, gentle touchdown despite speed.

The old guy takes a while to finish his mid air adventure and fails to stick the landing on the other side of the car. Bike’s fucked, but still moving. Back tire does a quick tail and smacks the driver’s side door.

The driver’s face is nonchalant, unsure, behind the times but his lady passenger knows from the beginning.

Waited until the cops came around and gave my statement. Old guy was perfectly fine but his bike was in tatters. That was the worst part I think.

Looked like an expensive bike but an inexpensive kind of man. Probably saved up for the fucking thing for years. Walked to class juggling an unopened can of arizona while some old guy’s clutching the dead skeleton of his road bike on the curb. Little dips of sun went to die and clouds took over everywhere.

Classic

I love it.

It's raining here. For a moment, when I was outside, that wonderful smell was apparent with a cool spring breeze. The clouds were dark, but the sun was still out. It was like I was on an alien planet. Absolutely beautiful.

I've never smelled it either. People keep telling me about it, but I have never been able to smell it.

Yeah, he was just holding the thing.

I hope the fuckers in the red car spring for a new bike for the guy.

Aw jeez, that really sucks. Shit like that would have me shook up for a couple days. I agree though, those people should try to help him get a new bike.
