What happened?

I was late for work on monday and then just barely late for work on friday, they said it's fine to be late as long as I call and tell them I'm going to be late, that made sense and I signed a written warning. So yesterday I thought I would probably be barely late again so I called and told them and they said I needed to call earlier, said it didn't count and to not come in for work. Today I came in to work early, signed another warning and apologized profusely, at which point they showed me a termination notice.

he was warned after the first two times and was late again
so why wouldn't it be a reasonable reason for them to fire him after basically saying 'don't do this again or they'll be consequences'
