what's the best civilization game?

a series i always tell myself i am going to get into but i never do.

i currently have civ4 on steam and i'd like to do multi with a friend of mine, and he wants to know if civ4 is the way to go. should he just get it too? or are there any other ones (civ5?) that are better for the long run?

Civ IV is the best. Civ II is great too but probably more for nostalgia at this point. Civ V has its first true expansion coming out soon so hopefully that makes the game a bit better but for now it just doesn't interest me the way Civ IV always did.
