Appala-shin. I'm not actually southern but I've spent the last 10 years of my life in SC.

I'm taking an anthropology class this semester & we have to read this whole book about the history of Appalachia. It's so fucking boring.

What pronunciation is more Southern?

I've heard my mom say it with "shin", but I don't think I've ever heard the word spoken at all by anybody else

^ There are at least eight possible pronunciations depending on three factors:

  • Whether the stressed vowel is /eɪ/ or /æ/,

  • Whether the "ch" is pronounced as a fricative /ʃ/ or an affricate /tʃ/, and

  • Whether the final vowel is the monophthong /ɨ/ or the diphthong /iÉ™/.
