And now each one of us has a choice to continue our direct linage.

Yeah, and I think the point of our age is to move beyond simple concern for the interests of individuals, onto concern for a larger organism and individuals as part of the organism simultaneously... conscious concern for the organism, not a simple biological concern for ensuring the organism is propagated into the future (maybe this makes sense??). I almost definitely will not have my own children, and I'm fine with that.

I'm a little thrown off by "the point of our age" too.

I think I know what you're saying.  Maybe.

We are gaining awareness for the overall efficiency and well-being of our species as a whole.  This includes, to a degree, a biological concern, but it also encompasses societal problems as well.

And yeah, I'd agree with that.

But that just sounds like not caring about something that's more closely knit just to only care about something that's larger than everything and kinda more abstract that each individual by themselves don't even have to put much thought or work or care into it. Though I guess you could say it's ultimately way more responsibility than just continuing on a family lineage since it's on more of a grand scale.

Sorry, I typed it quickly as one thought without going back and thinking about what the words would actually mean from outside my head. I think (I agree wit u btw) I meant that as a species we are beginning to move beyond considering procreation as a necessity and individual apoptosis as an unfortunate alternative; instead,  our ~point~ in life is to contribute to the social organism's growth in ways other than, but ~equally important as~, physically procreating. But I also hate materialism and am very prone to considering lofty transhuman ideals as reality . . ..

I don't think humanity will ever achieve anything as a species if we don't aspire on a grand scale.
