Go Down

LCK

I haven't been to a class in 3 weeks.
I have absolutely no desire to continue school. I have no aspirations that can be fulfilled with a degree.
All I do anymore is smoke, drink, hang with friends, eat, sleep, and have sex.
I am completely broke, and am relying on financial aid to pay rent. Speaking of which, I'm half a month late already because financial aid is not timely.
I never go to class, and don't intend to, but I continue to stay enrolled the entire semester and gather more debt because I need the financial aid money to live and the school also takes back my laptop if I drop below a full-time credit load.
I also just got in a huge fight with my girlfriend, and apparently she's afraid that I'm going to hit her. That makes me want to cry. I would never hit her..ever. I don't want anyone to be afraid that I'm going to hurt them. I don't hit people.

typing all of this is such a release

but it really doesn't help anything

I'm in the same boat as you, as far as school goes.

I haven't been to two of my classes since the first day. I need to withdraw because my GPA is so low, and I will not get financial aid next semester if it drops anymore. Yet I don't want to go back next semester because school seems more like a waste of time and money, and I don't have the patience for it anymore. The financial aid is not even worth it, because what little I get is eaten up by books and supplies. The only reason I even decided to go back to school was because people apparently are able to live off their financial aid (which I don't even see how it is possible, I mean goddamn)

So, I'm not going back to school for some time, if at all. If you really want to finish up, then do it. But if you drop out, then you're going to have to get a job (or perhaps two, as my case may be)

You have other alternatives to school. If you need a break, you could always travel. Theres WWOOFing, which is essentially working over seas in exchange for food and board.

Also, there is Americorps, which is kind of like the peace corp for people without degrees, and it is strictly based in the US. You would be doing things like helping communities and the like. You would stay in a dorm or something with other people your age and it's looking like an attractive prospect, for me at least.

The thing with college is that you don't really have to knock out what you need to do in one fell swoop. You can break it up, take some classes here and there, and you're set. It's going to take longer to get a degree and shit, but it doesn't matter how long it took to get it, just your gpa and that you actually got it, is what counts.

It's kind of a shitty place to be, doing something you don't want to do. Don't push yourself too hard, because it's not worth it.

I'm in quite a rut myself, this americorps thing sounds rather cool

it's a good feeling when people can relate to problems

I feel like that not wanting to go to school thing is a huge problem with a lot of people these days... I wonder if it's some sort of generational thing?

It could be.

Years and years and years of people pushing college probably broke our back and now we're like "fuck i'm going to bake cupcakes" or whatever.

College just seems like a waste. Why would I go to school for four to eight years and accumulate a massive amount of debt when I could learn a trade and join a union and practically be set for life. Sure, it's hard work. But the red tape and hassle of school is avoided. Unless you're going to be a medical doctor or something, school just does not seem viable. Plus, I think many people are tired of learning in a school setting, and would much rather have "real life experiences"

I'm not saying I'll never get a degree, because I'd like to get a degree in something. Just not right now, because I just don't have the patience for it anymore.

yeah, we're in a generation that needs to quit traditional colleges and do its own thing. I think it's hard for us to see the point when we're stuck in the middle of an economic doop, 4 years these days hardly gets you anywhere except in massive debt and none except for a select few are willing to waste 8 years pursuing professional degrees (PhD is the new Bachelor's, as they say)... I'm done with it, like Trevor said there's nothing colleges offer that I'm even interested in shaping my life with. It would just be going for the sake of 'going to college', and I think that's what 75% of people our age are doing. The future will be a lot more people working for themselves (in their community, on the internet, artistically, etc) creating genuine services/products and less of this rigidly defined 'job market' where the only entry point for professionals (i.e. not craftsmen) is through 4 year 'programs' that are basically identical everywhere... let's make it change now. we not slaves, we idealistic and creative people who actually have the talent and drive to do something unique.

FUCK YOU AND YOUR COLLEGE DREAM, FACT IS WE'RE STRONGER THAN ALL

dropping out of college was the first major life decision I made only for myself (i went because i knew my parents wanted me to) and it was the best fucking decision I ever made.  You've gotta trust yourself, because you're the only one who really knows what's best for you and your life.

two days after I moved into my post-college apartment I met the vziard and I never knew I could feel so happy.  fuck college.  don't go if you don't want to.

This universal apathy exists for a reason and that reason is all of the godamned hoop jumping that's involved with university life and the lack of fulfillment that's coming alongside it.

I'm actually studying something that I find fascinating and something that I really do want to end up in in a few years, but now that I'm getting into the bulk of the "content" of my program, I'm realizing more and more that the vast majority of this content can be found in textbooks and articles.

Professors and department heads bitch and moan about student attendance and apathy but rarely stop to consider that they're the source of the problem. The engaging professors that provide engaging, experience based (and often opinionated) content and ideas are a rarity and often run directly counter to the stuff you'll get in your other classes.

On the other hand, now that you're sunk into it this semester, just finish it through. Go to class. Take the notes. Take the exams. Do the papers. Wasting the money and the time right now is stupid and counterproductive.
