Well, the worst case scenario one would imagine is that the thugs you come up against are armed in some way. Maybe as a way to defend yourself as a last case resort?

Not to advocate weapons in all fights, but when you're walking in a shady area, it may be better to be safe. At least carrying mace would be beneficial.

Of course, I have never really encountered a problem walking in bad neighborhoods. It was my experience that if you just mind your business you typically don't get messed with.

I haven't been in a fight since I was in fifth grade. It's hard to get on people's bad sides when you hardly even talk. And I pretty much stopped talking after sixth grade.
