perfect choice for an anime that you just want to have loads of fun with. genuinely entertaining in every way, not meant to be taken way too seriously but definitely not unintelligent regardless. i can't believe i never tried it earlier. and david seems to like mechs so that's a plus.

and because he seems like mechs, i also recommend Full Metal Panic! since it's probably my favorite "classic" (though it's not actually that old, it just seems to really follow the mecha formula) mech show
