the usgs upgraded the magnitude again of the main quake, it's now at 9.0.  confuseddood;

in terms of sheer damage caused, it's possible since japan is a more developed nation than those severely affected by the 2004 one.   but i doubt anywhere near 230,000 people will die

It seems silly to me that we don't have the technology to determine when major earthquakes will happen years in advance

it seems silly to me we don't have the common sense to determine major risk areas for human settlement years in advance.
