Display Output from Laptop

So I have a fairly nice monitor I wanted to try hooking my laptop up to instead of using this tiny 11" display all the time. However, my laptop seems to only put out a signal in 800x600 resolution, which is absolute shit. I tried looking through a bunch of settings, and 800x600 seems to be the only option. The graphics card claims to be able to output in HD, so this probably shouldn't be happening.
