There is more to it being better than just knowing if it was 100% correct (btw we did play the subs and they matched up with dubs)

The voices sounded better, the sound effects were better, it just sounded better overall.

Not to mention the dubs can be just as wrong as subs

a faithful dub from a competent group is likely to be more coherent and "correct" than an old fansub, even if the translation isn't completely 1:1 (which it should never be)

Except with the translation there it is exactly the same thing. You interpret meaning through the text and through their emotion, the tone of their voice, their actions. It isn't that hard to do...
