Ok I bought a nettop to use for seeding and a media server.

It comes with Windows XP (lol) so I'd like to remove that and go with some linux distro.  I'm not sure if I should just go with Ubuntu or screw around with a distro optimized for netbooks and nettops.

Any suggestions? I just need to be able to install stuff like rTorrent, lighttpd, sqlite, and a few other things so I can get my webui working.

From my limited experience, don't worry about UNR, since it's pretty much just a theme change that I really didn't like. Linux Mint was very nice  giggle;

But there's probably distros out there that would much better suit your needs so yeah lol

I'd just go with Ubuntu 10.04, the debian base seems to be the most compatible with stuff like rtorrent, and you get ubuntu-desktop and other helpful shit thrown in (VNC and tasks of similar cilber are fairly effortless in my experience with VPSs). and it has the most online material available (besides maybe centos) for googling random errors.

If you want a crazy amount of optimization then arch or gentoo.
Also what kind of wireless card does it have? Broadcoms are a bitch to setup.

Well, in order to have all these experience to be more pleasurable and a less troublesome one, it is better that if you not do anything with it at all. Window XP is great to use and there is not much of a problem with it as XP seems to be the most stable version of windows and you are just using it for seeding. But if you would like to change, Ubuntu will be the best choice.

Windows has too much overhead compared to linux and has a godawful command line.

I prefer working with *nix systems and their sane command lines.

also i went with ubuntu because it was the thing i knew how to configure rtorrent, apache, and scgi with the quickest.

Do you need a GUI?

No.

I don't even have a monitor on my nettop. I can do fine working from the command line.

So you got the server version of Ubuntu right? And uh.. you don't have a monitor on that computer but you work from command line? Via SSH, amirite?
