They say that you like to listen to depressing music when you are depressed. Like it comforts your more than cheerful music.

Well, recently I started listening to some Mars Volta albums again after taking a break for a while, like a year from listening to them. And I actually find it difficult because most of it is just so depressing.

I guess I have become a lot less depressed over the months. I know I was generally unhappy junior and senior year of high school.

Have you ever experienced this effect with music?

??????

Yes.
I find myself listening to depressing songs when I am happy.  giggle;

What do you find depressing about TMV? It's certainly emotional but I'd call a lot of their music energizing and uplifting.

?????

Not really. My mood has been pretty good so far too :O

I only listen to Arcade Fire's "Funeral" once a year and that date is coming up, and that's always a depressing time. In terms of other music, though, I've been skipping around through artists, and even though some of them have been depressing (Antony, e.g.), they haven't been reaching me emotionally as much as musically. So Dosh and The Unicorns are just freaking me out, but Antony isn't, even though I'm pretty depressed these days.

It is peculiar, but nothing quite cheers me up like listening to a group of depressed folk talking.  happydood;

YPrrrr

Is it weird that I don't find "The Funeral" depressing?

Not really. It's not quite as depressing as it is uplifting. But it can be both at many times. That's what's so beautiful about it.

When I am depressed I usually listen to hip hop or something and it gets me up again. Depressing music just puts me in a shittier mood.

if i'm depressed i usually listen to the angriest/most hardcore music i can. same with if i'm pissed

Even I'd bet you that the Pitchfork review for "Suburbs" will contain the word catharsis, just like for their last three discs, I think it's really true. The album for me is about facing things, and engaging with problems that are easy to ignore...about release and control.
