Sam

(copypasta'd from a Facebook Note)

So I have this internship being handed to me on a silver platter: travel the country with TOKYOPOP hosting an internet-reality show for anime/manga fans around the country. Go to every con for free, plus host our own events in cities everywhere. Stay on a VERY large tour bus with 9 people from May 20 - whenever school starts and have the time of my life essentially hosting the biggest "otaku" tour in America.

But it's not as great as it seems.. at all. :\ It's an unpaid internship, so even though I'll be getting into all these cons for free and whatnot, how will I be able to afford books when I get back to school? Let alone the things I want to buy like a new camera, cosplay, con paraphernalia, etc. Plus, it's ALL summer. I'll be missing my best friend's birthday, the last airbender release (which I've been waiting for forever), I don't know how conventions like ct-con and otakon will work (which I was already prepared to go to) and I don't know how I'll be able to continue my YouTube show, which I really think has potential but will probably die off if I just stop for the summer. Although, since this is an internet-based tour, I may be able to legitimately HELP my youtube show through this. It's DEFINITELY a great way to get my name out.

The internship would also look AMAZING on my resume. I mean AMAZING. It shows I have people skills and that I can take charge of crowds and that I can be a part of a team. Aside from that, it's an amazing experience in itself. And if I do decide to go into gaming media, this internship is, literally, perfect for me. Who knows? Maybe it'll lead to an internship at XPlay or AotS. Maybe not, but you never know.

Point is, I've been thinking and thinking and thinking about this, and I STILL don't know what to do about the situation. So I'm tagging anyone who I think could have good input on the situation, or would be affected by whether or not I decide to do this?

WHAT DO I DO?

so yeah, help PLEASE
1.8mb is too huge for a sig nigga

Andria

I'd take the internship.

The money issue might be there but what if you were to not do it then not be able to find a job? that would put you in the same situation basically but with less fun

If it was paid, it would definitely be worthwhile. No pay is a deal breaker though... unless you really like cons.

YPrrrr

Couldn't you just tell your fans to watch you on the tv show

famy

why would you pass the opportunity to showcase your nerdiness like that

i'm sure your youtube fans will send you money

don't let's

This is a good idea, you could use the tour for marketing of your own videos (or whatever you do I'm not exactly sure) and a shitload of social networking. If you want money, setup your own website, start promoting it now via YouTube, get good search engine rankings before the tour, then promote the shit out of it with everyone you meet. Throw some ads on there or figure out viable paid content and PROFIT

Samus Aran

not to mention there's the idea of making "on the road" videos, to give updates and behind-the-scenes awesomeness on your travels and plans and whatnot, while still being nintendofangirl

and, i don't know, sometimes stuff on youtube doesn't quite die out that quick, you never know

personally i'd take the internship, it sounds like an opportunity you'll never get again

C.Mongler

tell your fans you'll send noods if they donate. i'd lend a few bucks  giggle;

Go in a heartbeat! This is a pretty rare opportunity, and you're resourceful enough and have a following enough to turn this into some cash, as long as you're very conscientious about spending money and advertising yourself. Still...only do it if you're willing to worry about money AND touring AND sending your love to friends.

pompous talk for my eyes water and quiver with a twitch like a little bitch

This all comes down to what is more important to you, your youtube show or this opportunity.

Your youtube show has a lot of potential at the moment to gain thousands of subscribers a month, I think you already know this due to the sky rocket in subscribers from your new year segment of having <2,000 to what? 4k now? (too lazy to check.)

So, it's been, what, 4 months? And you've gained more than double your subs in a period of 4 months. This is probably because of you making a video a week or something, but the moment you stop doing this you can expect an immediate freeze on your sub count pretty much.

Youtubers are bastards and only sub constantly in large numbers when you do a lot of activity. Basically, if you couldn't continue your youtube show you'll pretty much shoot all chances of it escalating into the 100k region to shreds. Unless you expect your fans to come running back to you months later, which, rarely happens unless your one of the top 100 on youtube.

Right now, what's more important to you? This opportunity, or escalating your hobby into something that gives you internet fame/some irl fame? You've pretty much said your show has the potential to do it. It's just up to you what ones more important to you.

If this doesn't make sense try work it out, tired as fuck and a little drunk.
