I have a couple stalks of really nice black bamboo I took from the art department when they were cleaning out some rooms and shit.
I was planning on making some flutes out of them, but I never got around to it.
I bought a blowtorch today and some long drill bits and I was planning on getting started on one, but upon inspection, one of them was badly cracked.
The other looks nice though.

Does anyone know where I can buy some more? Online maybe?

Thanks, because I know you're all bamboo experts.

Thanks.
I couldn't find a site that just sold poles at a smaller thickness.
It was always building materials and other shit.

I expect the shipping and handling is going to cost more than the product itself though.

Make a panflute

Nah.

I'm going to make a four foot Shakuhachi tuned one with the black bamboo stalk.
I'll make it into a side blown and it wont be a traditional size, but I love that scale.

I hope it works out.

Take pictures of your progress. Should be interesting.     giggle;

I've done a couple before.

The first one I made was actually from a long piece of black walnut.

It was more of a chore than I thought it would be, especially tapering one end down to make a mouthpiece. I ended up using some cheap cork to make a wedge and it took a while to chisel down the opening in the front.

It looks great, but my tuning was terrible and there's really only three notes that sound halfway decent. I was going for a traditional pentatonic scale, but I mangled it.

Bamboo is a lot easier to work with as it's already hollow, but it's prone to splitting.
I just take a long dowel to sand down the inner walls.

I know a guy who can carve chain out of a solid block of wood.

Isn't walnut a hardwood?   O_0
