I'm not sure why it works that Link is a silent protagonist, but it does. For some reason, he simply doesn't need dialogue, as Nintendo has proven many times over. Maybe it's because he wouldn't have much of anything interesting to say anyway...he's quite a dull, regurgitated "hero" personality anyway. What's he going to say? Nothing fun, that's for sure. Or maybe it's because him not saying anything allows us to feel like we have more control over him. I dunno.

I'd be a little annoyed if Nintendo suddenly tried to give him spoken dialogue. Maybe it's just for the sake of tradition at this point, but either way, I know it'd be weird.

I agree, he works much better as a silent hero. I could see giving Mario more spoken dialogue, but Link is the one character I think that's best suited as the strong silent type
