I've studied theory for years and I"m proficient with  a variety of instruments , but when I started edging into the higher level courses, I felt a little out of my element.

Practicality wise, I'm not sure what direction that'll take you.
You'll probably end up teaching(?)

I guess it's like going to school to be a filmmaker. You can go to class and learn everything about making films,  but when all is said and done, you need to be naturally skilled and have to have your own unique vision to become anything remotely successful.
