american "animes" are called cartoons. A lot of people consider avatar to be an "anime" even though it's american because it uses a lot of similar styles. There are a few giveaways to it being American though, especially the transitions between scenes. Chill people call avatar an anime, but technically it is not and therefore isn't allowed in things like AMV contests and also is hard to find on sites that stream anime.

and creeper, the term "anime" is exclusive to japanese animation.
