My favorite monospaced font is Anonymous. 
Variable width is probably Trebuchet MS or Georgia.

As is Georgia.
However, I have to manually type Anonymous and even then only people with it will see it.

Variable:  Lucida Grande or Bitstream Vera Sans

I actually like the Vista fonts. Calibri for variable-width and Consolas for fixed-width, though ClearType itself looks horrible with the weird color distortion.
I don't like serifs.
