How do I tell when to use the correct form of the word?

Whom is used when its the direct object of the sentence; who is used when it's the subject.

When it's preceded by a preposition, like to or from, it's always whom. Also, when the subject changes during the sentence: "Veal is a dashing young man whom I desire," for example.
