Hiro

Sorry skylark but green day did in fact used to be a type of punk. The really terrible generic type

Skylark

I hear people say that but when I listen I don't hear it. punk rock /=/ punk rock

Hiro

Think of it as how both elvis and slayer are rock.

Skylark

I understand that, but 'rock' is a very general term, more so than punk I think. And I also think that pop-punk and punk are not very similar at all.

The difference between Crass and Green Day is so huge.

We're talking about that fact that Green Day supports MTV and rakes in the $$$ is generic and doesn't act on change. No, that isn't what punk is about.

You have to understand that punk genuinely is more than a music genre, it started out as such and it (on a smaller level) continues to be that way.

"Punk rock" stands for standing whatever the fuck you want to stand for regardless of what people think; therefore supporting MTV could be that. But I wouldn't call Green Day punk because they're in it for the money... wait, I might be contradicting myself.
I support BUSH

yeah that sounds sort of contradictory... generally supporting MTV goes along with being in it for the money. Let's "make it big"

Punk Rock has reason. It doesn't just rebel for the sake of it.  They do it for the sake of the people, going against the man. It's a form of music that tells us that we can't just play the nice guy all the time. In today's society, a little bit of being a dick is necessary to fight for your own right. That's a message that some of Punk Rock tells us.

YPrrrr

No, I am actually very interested in hearing how Green Day qualifies as punk music

Listen to the CD called Insomniac. I find it to be their second best album behind only 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. The early stuff is punk.
