Humans have the ability to wipe out an entire species.

So does an asteroid, or climate change.

A human can choose whether or not to do it.

An asteroid has no conscience.

Species also can be destroyed by natural predators and other species which eat from the same source of food, it's one of the key concepts of Natural selection.

But those animals generally aren't killing for fun or to be "humane", but simply out of necessity.

I see, I suppose you are right, survival is the greatest instict, but all predators must have some form of natural aggressions, weather or not it is necessary. wild animals, no matter how docile, can randomly turn against their owners or their own kind. Even cats and dogs, many that have been bred specifically as house pets for eons, still will attack small lizards, rodents, or insects, this isn't necessity if their owners feed them properly, it is more for enjoyment, cats even play with their prey's carcasses without eating it.
