I'm kind of set on the names "Bitter" for the male and "Blossom" for the female.

I posted these pictures on some other forum asking people to identify his/her sex and species.

I'm planning on buying two cages, mating them and then putting the females in one cage and the males into another once I've mated them once.

I've done a bit of research so far and not close to done with that.

well what lacey said was actually sorta right. you should move the father hamster into the separate cage immediately after you realize the mother is preggers. Why? a mother hamster can become pregnant two days after she gives birth. :3

Oh, and another tricky things... they can mate before you can even really tell whether they're girls or boys. soo... yeah. it's difficult.

There have been several occasions where we've separated all the girls and boys, then a few weeks later- bam, more babies. Putting too many boys together in one cage is a bad idea. they fight. I've had gerbils kill each other in fights before.

The mothers sometimes eat their children, but not often. I've seen it happen to one baby out of like the 100 we've had, and I'm pretty sure it was because it was a stillborn. They mostly just eat their children if they feel threatened by something. So don't try and pick up the pinkies or anything and yuo'll be all good.

I'm mostly speaking from my gerbil experience though... so if they vary from hamsters a lot you can probably disregard most of what I just said.
