I think becoming an atheist requires the same type of blind commitment joining a religion does.

Being agnostic is the way to go.  n_u

You cannot absolutely prove that a "God" does not exist, you also cannot absolutely prove that a "God" does indeed exists. All you can say is that there is a high probably that he does not exists given all that we know. As such, to pick one side over the other and stick to it no matter what, is extreme. Being an agnostic myself I don't really care one way or the other, it has no effect on my life.
