I love the western setting and a lot of western movies. However, yeah - there were some awful westerns, but when a genre gets that big and popular, it has it coming.

The three best western movies in my opinion are A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly, aka Sergio Leone's "Dollars trilogy". Clint Eastwood makes an excellent western hero (thought it's unknown if he's really a hero or in it for the money). Leone replaces the good cowboy with an ambiguous stranger to add realism (the wild west didn't really have any good guys), gets rid of melodramatic plots and romance, and uses brilliant camerawork to make three masterpieces.
