Your friend needs more practice with drawing anatomy and proportions correctly.

The writer needs practice writing better content.

the writer and the artist are the same person

I agree that this first real panel isn't amazing in the way of humor, but knowing the guy, I think it will get better.

also I think the drawing is cook the way it is; perfect cross-hatched proportions is nothing new

I don't think the guy is going for utter realism at all, so why would he bother with anatomy and proportion practice?
