Bassir's quest for a screen lock of OS X

One of the features I really enjoyed in Ubuntu Linux was the ability to set the display to sleep and prompt for a password upon return (locking the screen). After I switched to OS X, I longed for this feature, and I searched through the darkest corners of the internet to find a solution, as setting the display to sleep alone didn't prompt for password upon return and setting the screensaver didn't sleep the display, but I couldn't find anything. So, to solve this issue, I had to get a screensaver that launched and applescript that activated an application that set the display to sleep.

And here are the instructions to be able to sleep the display and be prompted for a password upon return:

0. Go to System Preferences, Security, and check the options "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver".
1. Go to your Utilities folder in your Applications folder and open "Keychain Access".
2. When in Keychain Access, press Command+Comma to open the preferences.
3. In the General tab, check the option "Show status in Menu Bar". There will now be a padlock in the top-right of your screen.
4. Download this zipped folder and unzip it, and place SleepDisplay.saver and Script.scpt into /Library/Screen Savers/.
5. Double-click SleepDisplay.saver, and click "Install" when prompted.
6. There will now be a new screensaver in the Other section in your screensavers by the name of SleepDisplay. Click it, and click Options under the preview.
7. In the first field, paste in "/Library/Screen Savers/Script.scpt", and click OK.
8. Now place the downloaded SleepDisplay.app into your Applications folder.
9. You are done. You may now click the padlock in your menu bar and choose the "Lock Screen" option to sleep your display and have a password prompted to you when you want to return to your desktop.

In windows all you'd need to do is check "On Resume, requires password" for when the screensaver comes on. Mac's dont have a simple feature like that?

Yes, well Mac OS X has that same option, but I wanted the display to just be off while the screensaver is on. I don't want some shitty animation, I want to conserve power and have the display off.

It's really simple to set up, and now it's as easy as clicking a padlock and choosing "Lock Screen" to leave my computer unattended and go take a piss or something.
