I've driven for about 14 hours in one day, if you have enough music to play to get your mind off driving it's not that bad. I'd take it in two days even if the first day is about 15 hours long.

My father drives about 5 hours, takes a one hour nap, then keeps on driving until we reach our destination.

Rest stops. As long as you're traveling major interstates, you'll pass by plenty of them. Just make sure to keep your doors locked, because rest stops are notorious for theft.
