You download a tool called ZiPhone, hook up your iPhone, click jailbreak, wait about two minutes for the whole process to finish, there's now an extra icon on your iPhone called "Installer" and you may now install applications.

Easy as that. And believe me, it's totally worth it. There are some really awesome applications out there, like TTR (guitar hero/rock band clone), iCopter (helicopter), MobileChat (a native chat applications), and many, many others.
