put it in your computer and boot it up.  plug in the external and then access your computers harddrive from Ubuntu and copy the stuff.

I got everything up in ubuntu, and now I can't figure out how to get to my harddrive. :(

Click Places on the top bar, and go to Computer.  Then pick your hard drive, the name should be like xxxGB Volume (where x = # of gigabytes)

Just go through there, and drag everything you want onto your external drive.
