A recent series of hauntings......or a cat-burgler is in my home

Ok, so I returned from my 6:30 pop culture class today only to find my door was dead-bolted from the inside, something I never do(my folks or brothers hadn't been home either).  After feeling a bit creeped I plugged my toaster in to make a bagel. I left the room and when I returned, the damn thing was unplugged. So two minutes ago I hear something fall down upstairs. Anyone know any good chants or techniques to ward unfriendly spirits from my immediete vicinity? I've got a curtain hanger rod nearby that's kind of heavy should my haunter be of the human sort.
