well I could probably write a metaphorical novella that expounds upon the ideas of musical creation/theory/principle/etc, but it would still be mostly opinion and that's not going to get us anywhere

So, basically there is no reason to claim that it has no "musical merit" other than the fact that you personality don't like it.

I haven't heard any death metal that I've liked but I'm not going to claim that it sucks or that it isn't real music. Of course it is.

Death metal is one type of music I truly can't consider music.

As far as I'm concerned, if it doesn't have a melody, or any type of meaning instrumentally or lyrically, it's not music.

But it does.  Instrumentally great.  Lyrically, I really haven't listened to the words because I don't really like the style of the vocals, so I can't make the call.

It is still music.
