QuoteSalem High student with unloaded gun nabbed
By Bruno Matarazzo Jr , Staff writer
Salem News

SALEM - Police arrested a Salem High School student yesterday after school staff learned the 17-year-old brought an unloaded pistol to school.

A police report said Jurgen Llanaj, 17, had the gun in his backpack, along with a single magazine and no ammunition in the gun, a .380 semiautomatic Beretta.

Llanaj, who police said does not have a license to carry a gun, will be arraigned today on charges of receiving stolen property, carrying a firearm without a license and carrying a firearm on school grounds.

"Given what's happening in the news, we expect schools to be a safe environment," police Capt. Paul Tucker said. "This incident speaks for itself."

Tucker added school officials acted "swiftly and appropriately."

High school Principal David Angeramo was tight-lipped about the discovery, only saying school staff "received information and acted on it quickly in conjunction with police."

Police arrested Llanaj at school shortly before noon yesterday.

Moments before the arrest, police received a report from the principal of a weapon on school grounds. When police arrived, Angeramo said the gun was found in Llanaj's backpack.

Llanaj was still being held at the police station lockup last night without bail.

Tucker said Llanaj hasn't been cooperating with police and the teen wouldn't say why he brought the gun to school.

"He did not make a statement," Tucker said.

Police later determined the gun had been reported stolen from out of state, possibly in Pennsylvania.

Tucker said the school wasn't locked down because school staff and police isolated the gun quickly.

A man who answered the phone at Llanaj's residence had no comment and before hanging up, said the case will be up to a judge to decide.

Tucker wouldn't comment on whether the incident was gang-related.

"I won't comment if he has any gang affiliation, but we are certainly looking at his background," Tucker said.
