But it has to be $700 or less, and it has to be a Dell. What's the best all-purpose laptop that's less than $700? Also, should I try to convince my grandma to buy from another manufacturer?

Isn't there a way to replace the OS once I get the laptop? And also, I didn't see any laptops with Ubuntu on it.

Yeah,  you can format the harddrive and install a new OS.

How about Acer? caterpie;

And whenever you do get it, install Fedora Core. If you plan on doing some gaming, well, partition it so you have a section with Windows just for gaming, and Fedora for everything else.

Or try to convince her to spend another $300 and take advantage of something like student discounts and get a Macbook. powerofone;

I just want a laptop I could use for anything, but within the price range, however, you bring up a good point powerofone;

Say a Macbook would last you a much longer time... and I'm sure it would. caterpie;

Yeah, like Lawlz said, try to convince her to go a few hundred dollars up and get a Macbook.

The artist formally known

XPS are fine, they're Dell and meant for gaming which is like some sort of sick oxymoron.

I like desktops though.

I might have to do that. All of the good stuff is a bit above $700, but a Macbook? I heard those aren't really good for gaming, but other then that, I had some bad experiences with Macs. If it was possible to replace the Mac OS, could I get better performance?

In my situation, it would be better to get a laptop. Also, can gaming computers make a good multi-use laptop?

why the hell would you want to get rid of os x are you retarded

  psyduck;

And since gaming computers tend to be powerful, sure? If you're willing to get a desktop, iMacs deliver power and are a fair price.

In my experience, OS X lags easy, and that isn't go (OS X does look cool, however, I would like something "less bulky", if you know what I mean).

Well that, when when I have used Firefox (either way, I hate lag).

Bulky may not be the right way to explain this, but because of OS X's transparency and other graphical effects, along with the apps (all of which lagged up at least once in my experience with OS X), causes the lag I experience at least once every time I use a Mac. If I am not mistaken, it takes some really good parts to allow the computer to boot OS X, which means if I use something like "bulky", I would have a really powerful computer.
