It's bearable, but after playing Thunder Force III and Lightening Force which have 0384653765 times as many objects on screen, far better graphics and music, and little to no slowdown, Gradius III is shit.

everything else is like d+ worthy or worse, but the genesis has dozens of great ones

The only good ones are in the Strikers: 1945 series, and those aren't even made by the same company and they only share a similar time period because it's like some pseudo-sequel thing but made by a completely different company and completely unrelated.
