Kalahari Inkantation

My computer just screamed at me. psyduck;
I was just sitting here typing, and all of a sudden, it makes a very short, sudden and unexpected drill-like sound. It lasted only around half of a second.
Why? psyduck;

Kalahari Inkantation

Okay, it started again, but it's going on for a while now. It's been screaming for around 10 seconds and it's still going... psyduck;

Samus Aran

Sounds to me like your hard drive is fucking itself.

Kalahari Inkantation

IT'S STILL MAKING THAT NOISE myface;

Infel

Like I said. when the things get old, they begin making funny noises and can become a fire-hazard. Unplug it for a bit.

Kalahari Inkantation

Shut it off, turned it back on, and it just stopped. psyduck;
Strange.

Infel

then it might have been overheating...

Heatsink?

And I'll quote:

Vic Jr: Ow, hey, that was my heat sink. Now where the fuck am I gonna sink my heat?

But I only shut it off for a second, that couldn't have been enough time for it to cool down and run smoothly. psyduck;
Also, I doubt it was overheating, just a few weeks ago I took out every last bit of dust I could find.

Even slight contact can damage a heatsink, moron.

'scuse me for not knowing about computers

Could be a sign of imminent hard drive failure. First thing my Mac did was making a popcorn popping sound, then lock up, and after a few days of this happening, it'd emit loud screams. Even if that's not the problem, I still suggest you back up your HD. caterpie;
