Some Japanese people know some English much like some Americans know some Spanish. Not that hard to say a couple of words and I'm sure shes not the only American there and she probably knows some Japanese.

A lot of Japanese people here can understand some basics, and there's always the picture menus that they hand you the second they see that you are American.  You just point, and they rattle something off in Japanese, you assume that whatever they are saying is "Cheeseburger," just in Japanese, and you smile and nod your head enthusiastically.  <3
